Author unknown- Holiday project-

These little hands hold all that is dear in my life.

They help me work, think and play.

With these two hands I write and draw.

I clean and build, hope and pray!

I give to you, my parents (or insert grandparents, aunt , uncle etc.), both these hands for all the many things you have given me.

But most of all they hold a heart that is filled with love for all the world to see!

Love, (enter child’s name)

Our lives and Endometriosis

by paloma in Health

I had a hard time given this entry a title . I thought about Endometriosis and me, or My battle with Endo, or just Endometriosis. I then realized though that the battle I have been fighting most definitely has not been mine alone and still isn’t. I feel like even putting the word Endometriosis in the title is giving it power. I am tired of giving the disease any power over me and my family. Fighting it is exhausting but that is exactly what we will be doing for the rest of my life. I don’t know if I can take comfort in the fact that others are going through the same things as we are. I think it just really makes me angry that any of us has to suffer through this disease. I did a Google search for endometriosis and there were 5,220,000 sites listed. This number is around what some estimate to be the number of women just in the United States that have this debilitating illness. On the endometriosis foundation web site they state that, “tens of millions of women…, struggle daily with the symptoms associated with endometriosis.” Websters online dictionary defines endometriosis as, ” the presence of functioning endometrial tissue in places other than the uterus that often results in pain and infertility.” No one is sure of the cause of endometriosis. Some doctors believe that women get this disease when the endometrial tissues that are shed during your period back up into your fallopian tubes and then into your abdomen. They call this retrograde-menstruation. Some others believe it could be genetic or caused by a weak immune system. Another theory is pollution in the air or in foods that we eat. Maybe even the chemicals they use in tampons or pads. The truth is no one knows for sure what causes it. According to an article on healthline.com, “endometriosis is typically diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 35.”

I was 27 years old when I had my first laparoscopy to find the cause of my heavy, irregular periods and pain. After the surgery my doctor said to me, ” I wish you had cancer.” “At least I would know how to treat that.” I couldn’t believe I had just heard a doctor tell me that. I had only ever heard of this disease because my aunt had recently had a full hysterectomy because of it.I have just had my left ovary and tube removed recently. I did feel somewhat relieved when he gave me a diagnosis because now I had a name for what has kept me from doing so many things in my life and kept me from being the outgoing person that I would like to be. This disease has also kept me from the most joyful thing in life, having another child. We have been told that the only way is to have IVF or invitro fertilization. This is something we will have to spend a lot of time discussing and make the decision that is best for our family. We have two wonderful boys so I can’t say we haven’t been blessed already. Some women are never able conceive because of this disease, so we are lucky.

I know there are women out there that are suffering but there are things you can try to help yourself be pain free. I am trying light excersise, I am still in recovery from my last surgery. I will be doing Yoga and walking daily. I am also trying to eat healthy things. Organic foods and whole grains. I feel these things will work for me. You should talk to your doctors and never be afraid to ask questions. There are also many web sites and organizations you can contact for support. You don’t have to deal with it alone although it may feel like it at times. There is research going on , not nearly enough, but we can all hope that one day the scientists will find a cause and a cure. Until then we have to take care of our selves and the other women fighting this life altering disease.

A great poem

by paloma in Uncategorized

I found this poem which I received in college from one of my professors. There is no author listed. I have always loved this.

Which Parent will I be

“I got two A’s” the small boy cried,

His voice was filled with glee.

His father very bluntly asked, “Why

didn’t you get three?”

“Mom, I’ve got the dishes done”,

the girl called from the door.

Her mother very calmly said,

” Did you sweep the floor?”

“I’ve mowed the grass”, the tall boy said,

“and put the mower away.”

His father asked him with a shrug,

“Did you clean off the clay?”

The children in the house next door

seem happy and content.

The same thing happened over there ,

and this is how it went:

“I got two A’s”, the small boy cried.

His voice was filled with glee.

His father very proudly said, ” That is great,

I’m glad you belong to me.”

“Mom, I’ve got the dishes done,”

the girl called from the door.

Her mother smiled and softly said,

“Each day I love you more.”

“I’ve mowed the grass”, the tall boy said,

and put the mower away.”

His father answered with much joy,

” You’ve made my happy day!”

Children deserve a little praise,

for tasks their asked to do.

If they’re to lead a happy life,

so much depends on you!

Music Lovers

Well my husband has introduced me to this really cool web site . Pandora Internet Radio. http://www.pandora.com You can create your own stations. It allows you to find a artist that you like then they will find artists along the same lines and put them together. If you don’t like it you just tell them and they skip to the next song. I am thrilled with it because I enjoy so many different types of music. I can create a station for what ever mood I happen to be in. Like Techno if I am cleaning really gets me going or some Frank Sinatra when we are feeling romantic or Jimmy Buffett , (if you know us you know that is on all the time ) when we are feeling, well really anytime. But I am enjoying it and think you will as well. I will keep you updated on any really cool new artists or bands that I hear. Thanks for visiting!

Soccer Family

by paloma in family, Fun

They all play soccer. They play until they can’t and then they coach. Some families have movie night , or game night or some other form of family togetherness. We have all of the above and we have soccer games. The Berry family has played soccer for four generations so far and there is no end in sight. Pop pop Berry and his brothers played soccer. Bill, John and Jimmy Berry all excelled at soccer. Jimmy Berry even made All American.Trip, Eric and Rob all grew up playing. Dana Berry, John’s Daughter made All State with Mount Pleasant High School and went on to play for the University Delaware. She continues to play today with friends she made throughout the years. Now John’s boys are playing for Caravel Academy. Jake Berry is a sophomore and has made First Team all Conference and his Team is now down to two games for the State Championship. He has let in the least amount of goals in the state. His little brother is not far behind and will no doubt be playing with his big brother in the next two years. Our boys are following right along. Tommy just finished his second season of instructional league and will be trying out for the travel team in the spring. TJ will be starting the instructional league in the spring. Pop Berry is always there as a cheerleader and assistant coach. He even gives a dollar per goal, a great incentive for a nine year old .

The boys in instructional league are learning the basics, dribbling, passing , the positions and what they should be doing. They are learning not to clump together and that the should share the ball. But most important, I think, is that they are playing for fun and fitness. It is not all about winning . It is all about having fun and getting and staying healthy. I watch TJ and Tommy play soccer in the front yard of the Berry house with their uncle Eric and their dad and it warms my heart. This has been our home for the past two and a half years and the memories the boys will have from living here in this great neighborhood and in the family home are priceless. The soccer tips learned in the front yard from uncles, great uncles, cousins and pop pops will stay with them forever.

I am so thankful for the beautiful fall days when we can all enjoy a great soccer game together. Watching the boys play soccer and knowing that someday they will be teaching their children the soccer tips that they have learned from their family and cheering them on from toddler soccer until they teach their own grand babies. Soccer is our family tradition.

GOOD LUCK TO JAKE BERRY AND THE CARAVEL SOCCER TEAM

Family Fun

by paloma in Fun

How many of you are felling like a football widow already? I know usually at this time of year it becomes impossible to get your significant other to do anything around the house unless bribed with hot wings and cold drinks for the game. If you do get them to get off the recliner it has to wait until half-time. Now I have two children joining their father in front of the TV. My nine year old son is into football almost as much as dad, and the seven year old usually does what ever big brother is doing.
Well this year my husband had a great idea . He started a Fantasy Football League for our family. There are six of us in the league. We choose our players and keep track of the stats online. Your players play against the other family members teams. The players consist of your Quarterback, a back up QB, three Wide Receivers, two Running Backs, a Kicker, a back up Kicker, and a defense. You have to keep track of the players on line and on TV because you have to be sure that your players are healthy and that you have someone covering every position. It may sound confusing to some of you that don’t know football or computers but it is really easy to learn. I have learned a lot about the game and players and I enjoy the special time I share on the computer and working out player trades with my boys. If you are interested in joining your men for some football or just looking for a way to feel closer to your family this is a great way to do it.

You could have a fantasy league for your family with nearly any sport. I suggest checking out:

Yahoo Fantasy Sports.

Back to school

by paloma in Uncategorized

When I was in school , we went back after labor day and the last day was in the middle of June. Now most schools go back in the middle of August and the last day is in the begining of June. Either way the summer comes crashing in like a wave then it is gone before we even get our toes wet. We all try to fit in vacations and sports camps, summer camps and summer reading. I myself am always dreaming of the never ending summer, or am I?

I love the time together with our children. They change so much, so fast. It seems everyday they are learning new things and asking new questions. Becoming more independent. They are not babies anymore. They are amazing. They are learning to swim, ride their bikes and socialize. Someday they won’t need mom and dad as much. But for now they are seven and half and nine and a half. Going into second and fourth grades. BACK TO SCHOOL! New schools for both of them, new teachers and new friends. Wow, that is a lot to handle.

The boys are excited about their new schools. Especially the youngest. He can’t wait to get on the new playground. The oldest is slightly more nervous. I believe this is more of a social issue then an academic issue. They are both looking forward to the school year. We are excited about the new schools, teachers and friends as well. I will miss them and think of them while they are at school. Hoping that they are not feeling the same anxiety that I felt in school. I will however enjoy my alone time. The “Five Minutes Peace”, we are always wanting. Of course that will have to come between working, house work, and all the other daily routines we as parents have to keep our homes up and running.
